The Organic Farm

Agronomists : Fabio Vallorani , Peter Zeppilli

The FIORANO organic farm is located in Cossignano , in the heart of the province of Ascoli Piceno, in the south of le Marche, central Italy. This area of le Marche is particularly well known for the high quality of its wines. A small area of the Piceno, including Cossignano, is home to Rosso Piceno DOC and DOCG Offida Pecorino wines.
The farm is located in the rolling hills just 15 km from the Adriatic Sea, about 50 km from the National Park of the Monti Sibillini. This ideal meeting point between sea breezes and Apennine temperature ranges contributes to a terroir that yields exclusive wines. We produce wines such as Rosso Piceno Superiore DOC and Offida Pecorino, which has recently been awarded the prestigious DOCG .
The soil type, typically clayey and/or sandy, is perfect for producing high quality grapes. The good temperature range, the low humidity and the breeze give rise to healthy grapes with the high-profile aromatic bouquet characteristic of FIORANO wines.

With respect for the local territory and its traditions, the farm grows only indigenous grapes such as Sangiovese, Montepulciano, and Pecorino, and produces wines from only our own harvest. The density of planting is 4000-5000 vines per hectare. The vines have all been renewed over the years and have natural wooden posts. The whole farm is certified organic, the vineyard and the winery, by CCPB  for producing “organic wine” following EU Regulation 203/2012.

The vineyards are grass covered all year round, to optimise their management and to combat soil erosion. Leguminous cover crops – such as vetch, fava bean, pea, and barley – and grasses are sown in alternate rows to naturally enrich the soil with organic matter.
The vines are pruned manually by spurred cordon or Guyot method. Their health is constantly monitored and they are treated, if and when necessary, with only those products allowed in organic farming (such as sulphur and copper). In order to achieve a high quality, our vines are cultivated for a low/medium yield, with manual thinning if necessary.

In 2003-2005, FIORANO participated in a study carried out by the University of Milan, whose aim was to identify optimal soil and climate conditions for vines, and to thus determine an optimal agronomic approach to the corresponding soils.

FIORANO is an active member of the organic wine makers association Terroir Marche Consortium, FIVI Association (Federazione Italiana Vignaioli Indipendenti) and is part of the Ascoli Piceno province’s organic “Filiera Corta”, the Legambiente Tourism Ecolabel , the SlowTravel network, and the Bike Hotel network.

The company features in the leading guides of the sector – such as “Slow Wine,” “Gambero Rosso,” and “ Vini l’Espresso”.

The company, through its many initiatives and intrinsic behaviour, is working for the protection of the environmental, and of local culture, with the awareness that sustainable tourism, sustainable agriculture and a sustainable economy are the only way forward.

We organise organic wine and oil tasting events for groups, on request just for adult guests. We also offer the opportunity to visit the farm, with a guided tour of our organic olive groves, vineyard, and winery.
